Overview - Safety in Canada's Upstream Petroleum Industry

One of the most important functions of the CAODC is enabling industry to achieve a continually improving safety record. CAODC does this both through internal initiatives that are brought forward by the membership (see sidebar links) and through cooperation with the broader upstream community.

CAODC members often direct their volunteer efforts to initiatives that improve the industry’s safety record. Year over year, both drilling and service rigs have seen reductions in incidents.

CAODC’s safety initiatives involve programs that are proposed and implemented by member rig companies for member rig companies (see sidebar links). The Association’s initiatives also include programs that are undertaken in cooperation with the broader upstream community.

CAODC is one of the six upstream petroleum associations that own and support Enform, the industry's training and safety association. The cross-sector cooperation housed in Enform gives industry valuable insight to its safety performance.

Enform uses its central position to raise awareness about incidents, near-misses, faulty equipment and regulatory information. It releases this information to an extensive network of industry contacts via bulletins called Safety Alerts.

More about the success of Enform’s Safety Alert program can be found here: Press Release

Enform has implemented a new online certification search (Connect).

This rollout will mark a change to how industry has traditionally accessed a worker’s Enform certifications and what these certifications will look like.

For more information, see CAODC General Bulletin G-11-13.
